The front page article that appeared July 1st in the International Herald Tribune tells the story: men and women in most countries are massively in favor of gender equality, but the reality on the ground does not reflect their voeux pieux. Certainly not in France.
A survey of 22 nations conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Global Attitudes Project in association with the International Herald Tribune reveals that three quarters of French respondents view men as having a better life than women –far more than in other country polled. Why? Because women are left out in terms of economic participation, ventures Prof. Herminia Ibarra, co-author of the 2010 Corporate Gender Gap Report of the World Economic Forum. There are still very few women running large organizations and business culture remains resolutely a boy’s club.

Many women would give their right arm to be on a board, but how to go about it? Judging from the discussion at the Women’s Day celebration organized by EuropeanPWN-Paris on 8 March, there’s no silver bullet. Chance matters; competence and experience matter; personality, gender and nationality matter; networking and keeping an open mind are capital. Meggan Dissly, Public Relations Officer, reports:
The venue: the arch-ceilinged underground labyrinth of the Maison de la Recherche on the Paris Left Bank. Dim lighting, wine, finger food and ambiance upbeat. Nadalette La Fonta Six, EuropeanPWN-Paris Vice President New Members, welcomed members and guests, breaking into the heated buzz of some 90 women busily networking. More

Have you ever wondered what the EuropeanPWN-Paris clubs have to offer and how to get involved?
It’s easy. When joining the Network you are automatically a member of all of the clubs. The harder part is choosing the ones best suited to your needs.
If you already have expertise in one of the areas covered by a club, you may wish to build on that knowledge and share your own experience with others. Or you may be a neophyte in some area where you feel that a little “varnish” would help you in your professional life. More

France Summary
While working women around the globe share many common experiences, local situations strongly influence how women view and experience their professional career. What are the local dynamics that truly shape women’s working experiences? Do women across countries differ in terms of what they’re looking for in their working lives? These are the questions our think tank group is working to understand. EuropeanPWN ran an online survey from March to October last year; 410 women participated from 58 different countries, 60% being French, US and Germans citizens. We extracted the responses from the French women to build the below results. Read more here
