Editorial November 2008 – From crisis to career booster!

What will be the impact of the financial crisis on the position of women in companies? Budget cuts, layoffs and reorganisations are taking place as we speak. Let’s be realistic: in general women have a weaker position on the labour market, for a number of reasons: they have often less than average tenure, do more than the average share of part time work, are paid less than the average male colleague, have fewer promotion opportunities, are less part of the informal network structures which count for promotion, and are still structurally overrepresented in those departments and functions that are considered as ‘overhead’ (that is: not directly contributing to the bottom line). Research has shown that up to three times more women than men leave the company in those situations, voluntarily and involuntarily. So what can each of us do to make sure that this crisis will not impact us in a negative way but even boost our careers? Let me share my top ten tips with you. More

Neelie Kroes - EuropeanPWN Board Room Round Tables, September 2008

European leadership in globalization: “The speed of change is accelerating – Are you still at the steering wheel?”

European Commissioner for Competition Neelie Kroes addressed 20 international board women of Europe’s largest companies on the key issues facing Europe’s competitive position in the world. This 2nd edition of the EuropeanPWN Board Room Round Tables was hosted by Egon Zehnder International.

Improve the entrepreneurial spirit

In order for the EU to remain competitive it is imperative we take measures to increase entrepreneurialism. More flexible labor markets and introducing flexible working arrangements while making use of all talent available have become a necessity in global competition. “We need more people in the labor process and we need them longer,” explained Commissioner Neelie Kroes. “We also need to choose and use the potential of women at the highest levels as this leads to better decision-making and better returns to shareholders.”

Third Bi-annual EuropeanPWN BoardWomen Monitor 2008

in partnership with Egon Zehnder International

  • Overall progress remains glacially slow
  • Norway by far Europe’s champion
  • Companies score better on international diversity than gender diversity

One out of ten board members is female

The top 300 European companies now have 9.7% of women on their boards, up from 8.5% in 2006 and 8% in 2004. Of a total 5,146 board seats, women occupy 501. European champion Norway jumped to having 44.2% women on boards as a result of quota legislation . Without Norway, the European growth rate falls back to 9.1% confirming the average growth rate of around 0.5 percentage points over each two year period from 2004 onwards. This development clearly demonstrates that quotas are an effective way to accelerate growth of female representation on boards. More

Recognition and reward for efforts key to women’s career satisfaction

The Think Tank Group “What is it like for working women in your country” has finalized its survey. It concludes that women, across regions and demographics, desire first and foremost work environments which are, ideally, meritocratic and reward them fairly vis-à-vis their male colleagues for their efforts. However, most women believe this type of environment does not reflect reality due to the large pay-gap that continues to exist between men and women. Achieving parity in pay is a much more important driver of career satisfaction for women than ensuring strong social benefits, such as government run programs, child care, etc… more

EuropeanPWN publishes its 8th book in the Women@Work series, ‘Women on Boards – Moving Mountains’

EuropeanPWN provides compelling evidence for the need to promote more women board members to European companies. The EuropeanPWN BoardWomen monitor conducted by Egon Zehnder in 2006 showed that only 8.5% of corporate boardroom seats in the top 300 European companies are held by women. In “Women on Boards – Moving Mountains”, EuropeanPWN in association with Mercer, analysed the profiles of the 100 top women compared to their male counterparts and provides advice for both companies and women on board diversity.
